More than 150 Years of Clinical Cardiac Anesthesia Experience
At Maimonides our team of board certified and specialty trained cardiac anesthesiologists has more than 150 years of combined clinical experience providing cardiac anesthesia care for cardiothoracic surgical procedures.. In addition to providing anesthesia care for routine cardiac conditions, the team has extensive experience in treating patients with the advanced and complex diseases commonly found in the patient population at Maimonides Medical Center.
With extremely close working relationships with our cutting-edge surgical colleagues specializing in minimally invasive valve repairs and replacements, the cardiac anesthesiologists at Maimonides have developed a special expertise in caring for this unique sub-set of patients. Under the leadership of Steven Konstadt, M.D., the Chairman of the Anesthesia Department at Maimonides and an academic leader who has been widely published in the use of intraoperative transesophageal echocardiograpy, our team collaborates in the operating room with the surgeons to assess the proper functioning of the heart valves and cardiac performance before patients leave the operating room. This collaboration allows our patients to have the best opportunity for successful minimally invasive heart surgery and valve repair surgery, with all the associated benefits of an easier post-operative course, quicker healing and often the need for less post-operative medications.
Other senior members of our Cardiac Anesthesia team including Mark Kronenfeld, M.D., Vice Chairman of Anesthesiology, who helped create and run the Department of Cardiac Anesthesiology at Hackensack University Medical Center, and Guisseppe Trunfio, the Director of Cardiac Anesthesiology at Maimonides, have more than 50 years combined experience in running cardiac programs and treating cardiac surgical patients.
Our cardiac anesthesiologists are directly involved with the care of cardiac surgical patients before, during and after their heart operations. They are intimately involved in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit, planning and coordinating care for patients with our specialized cardiac surgical intensive care nurses. In each phase of a patient’s care, our anesthesiologists focus their attention on the goals of maintaining normal physiologic function, while ensuring that patients are sound asleep and feel no pain. Our patients usually experience minimal pain upon awakening from surgery.
In line with the growing trend in cardiac surgery to reduce the physical stress on the patient and shorten hospital stays, more advanced, less traumatic and less invasive surgical techniques are used by our surgeons whenever possible. This requires experience and special expertise in the use of intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) by our anesthesiologists, The use of TEE allows the cardiac anesthesiologists to evaluate the functioning of the different parts of the heart. This evaluation includes specific heart valve function before and after valve repairs or replacements, as well as the overall heart function after bypass procedures. A thorough TEE exam may also uncover some additional abnormality which can be addressed during surgery while still under anesthesia. The use of TEE allows the cardiac anesthesiologist to work in total collaboration with the surgeons in both planning and evaluating the surgery to ensure the best possible care for our patients.
The cardiac anesthesiologists at Maimonides will be a critical part of your medical and surgical care during heart surgery. They will work as part of a well coordinated team including the surgeons, perfusionists (specialists who run the heart lung machine), and specialized operating room and intensive care nurses to provide the highest quality of medical care during cardiac surgery.
