Brooklyn, NY (January 27, 2011) – Maimonides Medical Center announced today that HealthGrades has once again named it a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™, placing Maimonides in the Top 5% nationwide for clinical performance. In New York City, only Maimonides and New York-Presbyterian’s hospitals were awarded this distinction for 2011.
“This is wonderful news for the patients and families we serve,” said Pamela S. Brier, President and CEO of Maimonides. “The best outcomes are what we strive for, so the entire staff is pleased to be recognized at a national level for our efforts on behalf of patients.”
HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization, analyzed Medicare data on patient outcomes for 2007 through 2009 at each of the nation’s 5,000 nonfederal hospitals. The study identified those hospitals with the best overall clinical performance across all 26 medical diagnoses and procedures that the organization rates. Only 268 top-performing hospitals in the nation are named to the “Distinguished Hospital” list.
“Maimonides can be proud of the contributions of its physicians, nurses and staff in achieving outstanding patient care,” said Dr. Rick May, HealthGrades vice president of clinical quality services. “The Brooklyn community is fortunate to have access to some of the highest quality hospital care in the nation."
HealthGrades hospital ratings are independently created; no hospital can opt-in or opt-out of being rated, and no hospital pays to be rated. According to the 2011 HealthGrades study, Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence such as Maimonides have significantly lower risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates compared to all other hospitals.
In addition to this designation for overall excellence, Maimonides achieved recognition from HealthGrades for several broad categories of care in 2011, with an “Excellence Award” in each of the following:
- Cardiac Care
- Pulmonary Care
- Stroke Care
- General Surgery
- Women’s Health
- Coronary Intervention
Plus, Maimonides continues to rank #1 in New York for Critical Care (six years in a row).
Specific procedures and diagnoses for which Maimonides achieved Five-Star Ratings include: Spine Surgery, Back & Neck Surgery, Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Congestive Heart Failure, Pneumonia, GI Bleed, Bowel Obstruction, Sepsis, Respiratory Failure, Maternity Care, and Appendectomy.
Now celebrating its Centennial Year, Maimonides Medical Center is among the largest independent teaching hospitals in the nation, training over 450 medical and surgical residents annually. Widely recognized for its major achievements in advancing medical and information technology, Maimonides has 711 beds and over 70 subspecialty programs.
