MAIMONIDES OUTPATIENT REHABILITATION CENTER
At the end of hospitalization, patients are often discharged to other facilities where additional rehabilitation can be provided. Many Maimonides patients are admitted to the sub-acute Rehabilitation Services of Metropolitan Jewish Geriatric Center, while some receive therapy at home through Home Health Agencies or are referred to outpatient rehabilitation facilities.
Maimonides owns and operates its own outpatient rehab center for the purpose of providing a further continuum of rehab services to its inpatients and to residents of Brooklyn. As with inpatient rehab services, the Center is multi-disciplinary and provides specialized physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language therapy, and on-site treatment by Board Certified physiatrists. It treats pediatric through geriatric patients and accepts all insurance, including Medicaid and Medicare.
The Center provides traditional physical therapy modalities, therapeutic exercises, massage, mobilization, and education for all types of patients’ needs: arthritis, orthopedics (hip & knee joint replacement, back, foot & ankle, hand, shoulder, etc.), post-operative treatment, sports and work injuries, post-stroke, neuromuscular diseases, child developmental problems, and, of course, pain. Our physical therapists are specialized in treating lower back pain and they utilize the renowned McKenzie Method, also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy.
The Center’s occupational therapists specialize in helping patients improve their function and maximize their independence, especially in activities of daily living (ADL) such as toileting, bathing, dressing, and eating. We have a large, well-equipped ADL room where we prepare patients for their new relationships to such basics as the kitchen, the bathroom, and their new assistive/adaptive equipment. And we work with patients who have hand problems and fine motor control issues with a variety of splinting, use of fluidotherapy, etc.
Lastly, we provide–both in the hospital and at the center–the most advanced and sophisticated speech/language therapy available. Speech/language therapy is commonly needed in stroke care, geriatric care, and the hospital’s renowned ACE (Acute Care for the Elderly) Program. In our Stroke Program, speech/language therapy does not stop at teaching patients to speak again. It also provides important diagnostic testing dealing specifically with the stroke patient’s ability to swallow (dysphagia). Through advanced training, the speech/language therapists perform modified barium swallowing studies which allow the stroke treatment team to evaluate whether food could be aspirated into the lungs, potentially affecting the patient adversely.
We also specialize in working with children and adolescents who have speech impediments such as tongue thrust, cleft palate, stuttering, and speech language delay disorders, and with older patients who need training for communication devices.
