Pamela S. Brier, MPH
President and Chief Executive Officer
Pamela Brier is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Maimonides Medical Center. She has been at Maimonides since 1995, for eight years as Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer and since 2003, as the leader of this 711-bed major teaching hospital.
At Maimonides, Ms. Brier has been a staunch advocate for the highest standard of patient care that is also compassionate and focused on patients. During her time at Maimonides, she has worked tirelessly to position the hospital as a major tertiary care center while at the same time remaining true to its community roots. Ms. Brier has successfully recruited top quality doctors, nurses and administrative staff; invested in state-of-the-art, high-tech equipment – that resulted in Maimonides being designated by the American Hospital Association as one of the nation’s “Most Wired” hospitals. She worked to expand clinical services, including a new full service cancer center and a $116 million new nine-story inpatient pavilion. Under Ms. Brier’s leadership, Maimonides has gained a widespread reputation for medical excellence, compassionate patient care and innovation.
Ms. Brier’s accomplishments at Maimonides reflect her commitment to and extensive experience in the health care scene in New York. Her career includes several senior positions in the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation. She served as Chief Executive Officer of Jacobi Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital Center, two of the largest public hospitals in New York City.
Pamela Brier is known throughout the city for her commitment to public health policy and community service. In 2003, she was appointed by the Mayor of New York City , Michael Bloomberg, to serve on New York City’s Board of Health. She serves on the City’s Workforce Investment Board, reflecting her interest in community development and employment. Additionally, in 2008, Ms. Brier was appointed to serve on New York City’s Board of Corrections. Ms. Brier served on the City’s Community Service Board from 1995 to 2000, and she was a member of New York State Hospital Review and Planning Council from 1991 to 1996.
Ms. Brier is known throughout the city for her commitment to public health policy and community service. In 2011, she was recognized by Crain’s New York Business as one of the “100 Most Influential Women in NYC Business.” From 1996 to 2003, Ms. Brier was the Chair of the Board of Directors of Housing Works, one of the country’s largest minority AIDS housing advocacy agencies, and on the Board of the Primary Care Development Corporation. She is currently a Board member of the UNITE HERE/Union Health Center and has been an adjunct faculty member of the New York University Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.
Ms. Brier holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree with honors from the University of California at Berkeley and a Masters Degree in Health Administration from UCLA.

Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer
Dominick Stanzione has over 30 years of senior management experience, much of it in community hospitals with large teaching programs. Originally trained and educated as a physical therapist at SUNY Downstate, Mr. Stanzione went on to earn a Master in Public Administration Degree at New York University. He then began a series of progressively more senior roles at several hospitals in the Bon Secours Health System and Catholic Medical Centers of Brooklyn and Queens. For the last three years, Mr. Stanzione has served as Interim President and Chief Restructuring Officer at Long Island College Hospital (LICH) which recently merged with SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
Executive Vice President, Finance & Chief Financial Officer
Robert Naldi is the Medical Center’s Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Prior to joining the Medical Center he held the position of Senior Vice President, Finance of St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Medical Center and Beth Israel Medical Center. Mr. Naldi received his BS degree in Accounting from Lehman College of the City University of New York and his Master of Business Administration degree from Fordham University Graduate School of Business. “Maimonides is a thriving and growth-oriented facility which is driven by community needs. The folks here know the agenda of what we are trying to accomplish and are supportive of one another.”
Samuel Kopel, MD
Samuel Kopel, MD graduated from Brooklyn College and received his MD from the University of Bologna, Italy. He completed an internship, residencies, and a fellowship in Clinical Hematology at the Jewish Hospital and Medical Center. He also completed fellowships in Research Hematology and Oncology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Dr. Kopel became the Associate Director of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Maimonides in 1978. In 1995 Dr. Kopel assumed the position of Medical Director at Maimonides. He is board certified in Hematology and Medical Oncology.
David Cohen, MD
Executive Vice President, Clinical Integration & Affiliations; Vice Chair, Medicine
David Cohen, MD received his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Pennsylvania. He also received a Masters in Epidemiology and Health from McGill University where he was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar. Prior to joining the staff at Maimonides, Dr. Cohen served as Vice President for Medical Operations at the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation and as Medical Director at Bellevue Hospital Center. He has held academic appointments at Case Western Reserve University, New York University, and The Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
Derek D. Goins
Senior Vice President, Operations, Facilities & Support Services
Derek D. Goins has more than 30 years of experience at Maimonides, serving in various capacities since joining the staff in February of 1972. In his current position, he is responsible for the operation of all facilities and support services, which include 14 different departments, with combined annual budgets in excess of $35 million (operating and personnel). In addition, he is also responsible for all the construction and renovations in the Medical Center and its properties and the annual budgets associated with capital improvements. As Vice President of MMC Management, Mr. Goins is responsible for the management of all the real estate holdings of the Medical Center. Mr. Goins attended St. Joseph’s College for Hospital Administration and holds a RAM (Registered Apartment Manager) from New York University.
Karen Nelson, MD, MPH
Senior Vice President, Integrated Delivery Systems
Karen Nelson, MD, MPH, will direct our efforts to create a Health Home in southern Brooklyn for very sick and high risk Medicaid patients. She was the CEO and Medical Director of the Union Health Center from 1999 to 2012. Founded by the ILGWU at the turn of the 20th Century, the Health Center is a provider of primary and specialty care for 10,000 mostly immigrant and low-income active and retired union members. From 1996 to 1999, Karen was Vice Chair of Medicine at Maimonides where she played a key role in expanding our ambulatory care network and establishing a community-based training program for residents in Internal Medicine. She was Medical Director of Dorchester House Community Health Center from 1988 to 1995, a multi-service center in one of Boston’s poor neighborhoods.
Thomas Smith, DNP, RN, NEA-BC
Chief Nursing Officer & Senior Vice President
In his role as Chief Nursing Officer, Thomas Smith, DNP, RN, NEA-BC is responsible for nursing practice and patient care delivery across the continuum of care at Maimonides. From 2006 to 2010, Tom was Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Vice President at Cambridge Health Alliance in Cambridge, Massachusetts. From 1996 to 2005, he was Senior Vice President for Nursing at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, the first full-service hospital in Manhattan to receive the Magnet Award for nursing excellence. Tom's professional background as a clinician, educator and leader of nursing practice includes positions at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston City Hospital, and University of Massachusetts/Boston where he taught undergraduate adult medical-surgical nursing and health assessment. He has served as a Commissioner for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and is an active member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives.
Marcel Biberfeld, DSW
Vice President, Psychiatry/Community Services
Marcel Biberfeld DSW, is Vice President of Psychiatry and Community Services. He also served as Director of the Maimonides Community Mental Health Center and Administrator of the Outpatient Department. Prior to joining the Medical Center, Dr. Biberfeld's positions included being the Director of Social Work at Sheepshead Nursing Home and Founding Director of The Jewish Family Services, Inc. of Boro Park. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Directors at Ohel Children's and Family Services and Bikur Cholim/Guardians of the Sick of Boro Park. A graduate of Brooklyn College and Yeshiva University, Dr. Biberfeld is also the Vice President of Chaplaincy Services at Maimonides.
Martin A. Cammer
Senior Vice President, Finance Administration & Faculty Practice, Compliance Officer
Before coming to Maimonides, Mr. Cammer was the Administrator for Ambulatory Care at Jamaica Hospital and an Administrative Resident at the LaGuardia Hospital. He received his MBA from Columbia University. “I like the fact that my job is varied and that I get to interact with people at all levels of the organization on a wide variety of issues. The people I work with are great and everyday presents new and exciting challenges. I’m never bored.”
Walter J. Fahey, MBA
Senior Vice President, Management Information Systems & Chief Information Officer
Walter J. Fahey has helped Maimonides win accolades for its Information Technology in healthcare, including recognition for successful system implementations and compliance with the Leapfrog Group standards. In addition, Maimonides Medical Center has been named to American Hospital Association’s “Most Wired” and “Most Wireless” lists more often than any other hospital in New York. Mr. Fahey is a member of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS).
Special Assistant to President & Senior Vice President, Patient Relations
Douglas H. Jablon is affectionately known as “Mr. Maimonides.” The Patient Relations Department focuses on the social, economic and cultural needs of patients and their families with compassion and sensitivity, and this knowledge is shared with hospital administration in an effort to enhance the quality of care provided by the Medical Center. Mr. Jablon also oversees the activities of over 1,300 volunteers and countless volunteer programs from the diverse communities surrounding the Medical Center. Mr. Jablon received his Masters Degree in Education, Guidance and Counseling from Long Island University.
Joyce A. Leahy, Esq.
Executive Senior Vice President, Legal Affairs & General Counsel
Joyce A. Leahy Esq. also serves as Assistant Secretary to the Board of Trustees. She is the Privacy Officer for the Medical Center. Before joining Maimonides, Ms. Leahy was an associate with the law firm of De Forest & Duer, New York, New York. She received her degrees from Harvard University and New York University School of Law and is a member of the Bar of the states of New York and Massachusetts.
Sheila Namm, Esq.
Senior Vice President, Professional Affairs
Sheila J. Namm JD, RN, MA, responsibilities include Organizational Performance, Risk Management, Medical Staff Peer Review, Regulatory Affairs, Bioethics, Credentialing, JCAHO readiness, and Claims Management. She holds a BSN from Hunter College; a MA in Nursing from New York University; and a JD from New York Law School. Prior to her current position she was VP of Risk Management and Regulatory Affairs. “The diversity of the work is a challenge which I enjoy.”
Vice President, Planning
Eric Scalettar has worked in the field of hospital administration for the past 25 years. In his role as Maimonides chief planning officer, Mr. Scalettar has had an interest in the formulation of the corporation’s strategic plan and facility master plan, planning and implementation of major construction projects, assessment and structuring of medical center operations, developing physician networks, payer negotiations, capital and operations budgeting, interfacing with regulatory and governmental agencies and other external matters and affairs. Mr. Scalettar represents Maimonides on the Boards of HealthFirst, Inc., and Briarwoods Insurance Company, Ltd., as well as a variety of external industry committees and forums. Mr. Scalettar received a BA from Harpur College, SUNY Binghamton, and an MPH from Yale School of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health.
