 Message From the Chairman

When asked to describe Maimonides Medical Center, I say it’s a community and a specialty care teaching hospital. The word “community” always comes first.

This could be because we’re in Brooklyn, which despite more than 100 years of incorporation into New York City, never loses its sense of place. Or perhaps, it’s because we were born from citizen concerns about access to health care locally.

Regardless, the sense of community is palpable in our hospital, manifesting itself in everything from signage in the 10 primary languages spoken by our diverse patient base to a highly regarded Stroke Center created in response to the high incidence of coronary and vascular disease in our service area.

Our job is to bring to Brooklyn and beyond the highest quality health care, and our outstanding staff and administrators do that every day. From diagnosis through treatment, our patients benefit from the newest, most effective techniques and technological tools. We have earned our reputation as innovators. From the first implantation of a partial mechanical heart in a human performed here in 1966, to today’s advanced minimally invasive procedures that combine neuroscience and radiology to protect patients from the devastating effects of stroke, our professionals continue developing procedures and treatments that change people’s lives.

I have had the privilege to collaborate for more than a decade with the extraordinary people affiliated with this hospital and the community it serves. We share a vision for our future. We see a physical plant that accommodates modern tools, and treatments that improve patient outcomes and that allows us to care for patients in a respectful and culturally sensitive manner. We envision the growth of our medical center as a place where patients can receive the highest levels of care—from pediatrics to cancer treatment and everything in between—close to home.

We are aiming high. Our community deserves that.

Message From the President

It is a great privilege to lead Maimonides Medical Center.
I’m confident that the more you know about this wonderful organization, the more you will want us to be your hospital—whether as a patient, volunteer, donor or community supporter. That’s why we published this report.

Maimonides is Brooklyn’s premier academic medical center and teaching hospital. We pioneer medical breakthroughs, boast state-of-the-art clinical and information technology, train more medical residents than anyone else in Brooklyn and regularly win awards from independent evaluators for the quality of our care. We are humane, compassionate and patient-centered.

Maimonides offers a full range of inpatient and ambulatory services. We especially serve people at the beginning and end of life and during medical emergencies. Our physicians and midwives deliver more babies than any other hospital in New York State. One quarter of our patients are 75-years or older—and tend to be much sicker than those hospitalized elsewhere. We provide patients admitted through the ER with the most advanced critical care. Our long-standing tradition of excellence continues in the Maimonides Heart & Vascular Center.

We always reach for new levels of excellence, and important strides have been made. We created a highly regarded Jaffe Stroke Center. The Maimonides Cancer Center has gone from a dream to offering the finest and most advanced diagnosis and treatment. In cancer, stroke, cardiac and other specialties, we have recruited stellar physicians from top-tier academic medical centers.

The nearly 7,000 physicians, nurses and other staff at Maimonides Medical Center are committed to patients, their families and the communities we serve. Maimonides is indeed passionate about medicine and compassionate about people.
