<><><><><><>Maimonides Medical Center recently opened a new, state-of-the-art Psychiatric Emergency Room. According to its director, Dr. Abraham Taub, the new unit was designed with the utmost attention to patient safety and confidentiality, and is open 24-hours-a-day.
When a psychiatric patient arrives at the main Emergency Department, he or she is evaluated by an ER physician, and if no acute medical problem is found, the patient is admitted to the Psychiatric ER where treatment can be initiated quickly and in a specialized setting. The facility was designed to provide privacy and confidentiality to an often stigmatized patient population.
The staff in the Psychiatric ER is comprised of psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, social workers and others, with fulltime coverage by security personnel. Everything about the unit has been tailored to meet the special needs of patients and families in a soothing and uncluttered environment.
