Maimonides Receives National Recognition for Exemplary Outcomes From the American College of Surgeons

Named a Top 25 Hospital in Surgical Quality Improvement

November 2, 2009 (Brooklyn, NY) - Maimonides Medical Center recently announced that the American College of Surgeons (ACS) has recognized its "Exemplary Outcomes" in surgical patient care. This designation comes as a result of participation in the ACS National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, and places Maimonides among the Top 25 hospitals in the program.

"We are delighted to receive this recognition from ACS for the fine work being done by the Surgery professionals at Maimonides," said Dr. Joel Horovitz, Director of the Division of General Surgery, who spearheaded the Medical Center's participation in this initiative. "Our surgeons, nurses and technicians all do their part to ensure the quality of care before, during and after surgery."

"This is wonderful news for our patients," said Dr. Patrick Borgen, Chair of Surgery at Maimonides Medical Center. "The award recognizes that our clinicians and Quality Improvement professionals have successfully collaborated to improve overall patient safety in Surgery."

The ACS National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) is the only nationally validated program that measures and enhances the care of surgical patients. This program measures the actual surgical results 30 days postoperatively, risk-adjusting patient characteristics to compensate for differences among patient populations and severity of their conditions.

The goal of the program is to provide a firm foundation for surgeons to apply what is known as the "best scientific evidence" to the practice of surgery. In addition, it seeks to reduce surgical morbidity (infection or illness related to a surgical procedure) as well as surgical mortality. NSQIP is a major program of the American College of Surgeons, and is currently used in over 250 hospitals nationwide.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational organization of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical practice and to improve the care of the surgical patient. The College is dedicated to the ethical and competent practice of surgery. Its achievements have significantly influenced the course of scientific surgery in America and have established it as an important advocate for all surgical patients. The College has more than 74,000 members and is the largest organization of surgeons in the world.

The Department of Surgery at Maimonides Medical Center is world renowned for its prestigious roster of surgical specialists. They routinely appear on published lists of best doctors; they are repeatedly invited to be guest lecturers, present seminars and host presentations at national and international meetings; and they are widely published in peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals.

Maimonides recently opened a stunning new suite of advanced Operating Rooms in its newest pavilion. To learn more about the state-of-the-art surgical care at Maimonides Medical Center, log-on to the website at
