Brooklyn, NY (January 9, 2014) – The Maimonides Cancer Center, Brooklyn’s only dedicated cancer center, has been granted a three-year accreditation with commendation by the American College of Surgeons’ (ACoS) Commission on Cancer – a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients.
“It is gratifying for both our staff and the families we serve to receive this news. Full accreditation from the Commission on Cancer is the culmination of everyone’s hard work here at the Maimonides Cancer Center,” says Dr. Jay S. Cooper, Director of the Center and Chair of Radiation Oncology. “In fact, we received commendation ratings in five standards, including Nursing and Clinical Trial Accrual.”
Patients receiving care at CoC-accredited cancer programs, such as the Maimonides Cancer Center, are assured of having access to comprehensive care, state-of-the-art services and equipment, a multi-specialty, team approach to coordinate best treatment options, information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options, and quality care close to home.
The Maimonides Cancer Center is an Academic Comprehensive Cancer Program. As such, it provides post-graduate medical education, treats more than 500 newly diagnosed cancer cases each year, offers a full range of diagnostic and treatment services, and participates in clinical trials.
A facility can only receive accreditation after an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor who finds that the facility demonstrates a high level of compliance. According to the Commission on Cancer, “Accreditation by the CoC is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care, and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.” Accredited facilities must undergo an on-site review every three years.
An estimated 11,000 people in Brooklyn are diagnosed every year with some form of cancer. The Maimonides Cancer Center, first opened in May 2005, is a state-of-the-art facility offering a full range of cancer services, all conveniently located to maximize patients' time and minimize the disruption of their lives. The Center is designed to treat each patient as a whole person and integrate healing of body, mind and spirit.
The medical team at the Maimonides Cancer Center emphasizes a multi-modality approach to care, which means multiple methods of treatment are available to patients – sometimes simultaneously. Each patient's needs, disease and treatment are considered by a team that includes physicians from radiology, surgery, pathology, radiation oncology, and medical oncology. In addition, the Cancer Center offers a patient-centered environment, with a variety of support services to help manage the stresses that go beyond diagnosis and treatment.
Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn’s pre-eminent healthcare provider, is one of only 25 hospitals in the nation to achieve outstanding patient outcomes in all three categories of care that are measured annually by the federal government: heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia. Widely recognized for its major achievements in advancing medical and information technology, Maimonides has 711 beds and over 70 subspecialty programs.
