Maimonides Among the 174 Hospitals Cited in Prestigious Rankings
(Brooklyn, New York - July 21, 2009)
US News & World Report has ranked Maimonides Medical Center among the nation's Top 50 Hospitals for Respiratory Disorders, according to its 2009-10 publication of "America's Best Hospitals." Only 174 medical centers nationwide made the prestigious rankings in one or more categories.
"When the stakes are high, you want the best care you can get for someone close to you," said Avery Comarow, Health Rankings Editor at US News & World Report. "These are hospitals that are used to getting the sickest patients."
"We are pleased to receive this recognition from US News & World Report," said Maimonides President & CEO Pamela S. Brier. "This reflects on the dedication and expertise of our doctors and nurses, and is wonderful news for the patients and families we serve."
The Respiratory Disorders category includes the diagnosis and treatment of many common conditions and illnesses like asthma and pneumonia, as well as complex health conditions like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Patients with these diagnoses may require medical treatments and surgical interventions. Some require respiratory therapy and/or ventilators, and many need to spend time in the Intensive Care Unit where physician intensivists coordinate their care.
The methodology for the US News & World Report rankings includes scoring in multiple categories, such as: Mortality Index, Nurse Staffing, Key Technologies, Patient Services, Volume, Patient Safety and Reputation. The Reputation score for Respiratory Disorders is based on a nationwide physician survey of Pulmonologists; all other scores are based on review of hard data.
The mortality rate at Maimonides is among the lowest in the nation for Respiratory Disorders, and its nurse staffing ratio is comparable to that of other institutions featured in "America's Best Hospitals."
According to US News & World Report, the highest level of diagnosis and treatment for Respiratory Disorders requires certain Key Technologies: diagnostic radioisotope services, image-guided radiation therapy, multi-slice spiral CT, PET/CT scanner, stereotactic radiosurgery and transplants. Maimonides Medical Center provides all of these services except transplants.
The Patient Services score is based on whether or not the hospital offers the following: genetic testing/counseling, pain-management program, palliative care, patient-controlled analgesia, translators, infection isolation room, wound-management services and hospice. Maimonides offers all of these services except hospice care.
