Myth or Fact: Plucking Gray Hair Causes More to Grow Back

Posted Date: 6/25/2014

Stress has always been blamed for gray hair, but the true cause is a loss of hair pigmentation. "Hair is actually white and gets its color from a pigment called melanin," says Dr. Joshua Gizersky. "As we age, the follicles at the base of the hair shaft stop producing melanin, which causes hair to appear gray." When the hair grows, the entire strand will appear gray. "Pigmentation loss is mostly due to age, but environmental factors and stress can, speed up the graying process."

Some people try to pluck gray hair but "plucking doesn't help or alter the overall graying process," says Dr. Gizersky. But plucking also does not cause more gray hair to grow back in its place, which many people fear. "Chances are nothing will grow back from that specific site. Plucking will only get rid of the unwanted hairs."

While plucking gray hair won't cause more to grow back, it may create another problem. "You can only pluck so many gray hairs until you are speeding up the inevitable hair loss," says Dr. Gizersky.

Verdict: False.
