The Division of Gastroenterology has a fully accredited fellowship in gastroenterology and trains residents to develop the skills necessary to practice clinical gastroenterology. The curriculum of the fellowship provides an educational program with the proper resources and faculty to ensure thorough clinical knowledge and procedural expertise. The training experience assures that fellows acquire the competency of a specialist in the field. The program provides a well-supervised, progressive educational experience of three years and opportunities for fellows to develop experience in advanced endoscopy (including endoscopic ultrasound and ERCP), hepatology, nutritional disorders, gastrointestinal oncology and surgery of the gastrointestinal tract.
Clinical experience includes opportunities to observe and manage patients with a wide variety of digestive disorders on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Fellows are assured continuing responsibility for both acute and chronically ill patients in order to learn the natural history of gastroenterologic disorders, as well as the effectiveness of therapeutic programs. There is an emphasis on the pathogenesis, manifestations and complications of gastrointestinal disorders, including the behavioral adjustments of patients to their problems. The impact of various modes of therapy and the appropriate utilization of laboratory tests and endoscopic procedures will be stressed.
The program provides training in endoscopy, which occurs in a modern suite equipped to provide a complete array of gastrointestinal procedures. This equipment includes an up-to-date array of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic instruments and accessories necessary for all procedures listed in the gastroenterology curriculum.
Fellows are provided an opportunity to study the basic sciences as part of their clinical education. Also, there is active participation in clinical research projects with the advice and supervision of the teaching faculty. Departmental conferences, seminars and literature review activities are regularly scheduled with active trainee participation in both the planning and the production of the conferences. These conferences include information from the basic medical services, with emphasis on the patho-physiology of disease and reviews of recent advances in clinical medicine and biomedical research.
Excellent patient care is a primary goal and fellows are urged to have the welfare of their patients as a primary concern. Fellows should develop the necessary humanistic qualities, attitudes and interpersonal skills to allow the formulation of appropriate patient-physician relationships. These qualities include integrity, respect, compassion, professional responsibility, sensitivity to the patient's need for privacy, comfort, encouragement and an understanding of their illness, and appropriate demeanor towards colleagues. The social and economic impact of disease on the patient and society, as well as the efficient delivery of superior cost-effective medical care, is to be emphasized.
