Housing

House staff may choose to live in one of many historic neighborhoods that are easily accessible to the medical center via subway or bus. These neighborhoods include Park Slope, Bay Ridge, Midwood and Borough Park. These neighborhoods reflect an old-world charm with tree-lined row houses, brownstones and Victorian homes, as well as turn of the century one- and two-family homes and small apartment buildings. Living around Borough Park and its surrounding areas provides one an opportunity to live in a small neighborhood but still have access to the bustling and thriving Manhattan just twenty minutes away. Limited subsidized, on-campus housing is available for house staff at discounted rental rates. All interested applicants should complete an application for housing which can be obtained from the Office of Academic Affairs at the time a contract is signed for residency.

In order to apply for Maimonides Residency Housing, you must be accepted into one of our Residency or Fellowship programs.  The application will be sent out after Match Day to all accepted applicants.

 Please note:

  • Make sure Academic Affairs has your correct email. All housing offers will be made via email.
  • Any contact made regarding your housing application, accepting or declining, must be through email. Please make sure to confirm receipt of your housing application.
  • You must accept or decline your housing offer within (3) business days. If you do not respond within 3 business days your offer will be treated as a decline. Please make sure to check your email.
  • Most current residents work until June 30th, and vacate their apartment on June 30th. Therefore many apartments are not ready for occupancy until several days after July 1.

Maimonides offers a limited number of apartments to all new house staff with priority for residents. There is no guarantee that Maimonides housing will be available. Housing is assigned using a lottery system and established eligibility criteria, as outlined in the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The criteria, in order of their priority, are:

  1. Incoming house staff excluding fellows who are currently living more than 25 miles from the medical center.
  2. All other incoming house staff, excluding fellows.
  3. Current House staff excluding fellows, who requested housing in the prior year but could not be accommodated.
  4. Current House staff officers including fellows who are requesting larger apartments because of size of family.
  5. All other house staff including fellows.

For new house staff, excluding fellows, who apply for, but are not offered a housing unit, the Maimonides will provide a housing stipend of $200 per month for the first year of residency only. If you do not receive housing after the first round of the lottery, you can opt to stay on the waiting list. If you are offered housing at any point during the lottery process, you are not eligible for the stipend.
