Welcome to Our Midwifery Practice
Established more than 20 years ago, The Maimonides Midwifery Practice continues to deliver an unparalleled commitment to excellence in the service of expectant moms, new moms, and their families. Founded back in 1993 in Borough Park by visionary director, Phyllis Lynn, CNM-Midwife, MS, the midwifery practice has grown to serve moms all over Brooklyn. Thousands of healthy babies later, we are the established leader in midwifery care, and are proud to be part of a hospital that delivers more babies than any other facility in New York State.
The goal of our Midwifery Practice is always to meet the individual needs of expectant mothers and their families; we understand the intimate experience of childbirth and are thankful for the trust placed in us to help create a special beginning for mother and child. Years of experience serving our community’s diverse population provides us with the expertise to deliver care safely and according to a wide range of cultural values and personal preferences. We know today’s women expect the best care from a provider who listens, understands, and will help in making healthy decisions. Our practice is determined to make you as comfortable as possible before, during and after childbirth, and we will provide the personalized birthing experience you desire.
Who We Are:
Our team includes 14 licensed staff midwives comprised of both senior and junior members, each having passed the rigorous American Midwifery Certification Board Examination. All staff members have received their master’s degree in nursing, are members of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), and possess admitting and discharge privileges at Maimonides Medical Center. Our staff is fluent in multiple languages and can access additional interpreters if necessary.
Our Midwifery Practice is focused on the continuity of care throughout the pregnancy, and advocates non-intervention for low risk pregnancies. Our dedicated midwives provide pre-conceptual counseling, prenatal care, and postpartum care, while also providing for the needs of women beyond physical care to include breastfeeding assistance and emotional support. In addition to childbirth services, our midwives offer family planning/contraceptive counseling, gynecology, and well-woman exams. For every woman, we emphasize safe, competent clinical management and the importance of empowering women through health education.
- Pregnancy, family planning, and gynecological care at our private office or hospital family health center.
- 24-hour coverage of the maternity triage/labor and delivery area. We are available 24 hours/7 days a week for our patients' needs.
- Education and information on a wide range of women’s healthcare issues, such as antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum/newborn, breastfeeding, well-woman gynecology, and family planning.
- Counseling on nutrition, exercise, alternative and complimentary therapies, social services, smoking cessation, and depression screening.
- Voluntary and private doulas are available in labor and delivery to assist all women during childbirth.
Many of our staff midwives are clinical adjunct instructors for Columbia University, New York University and SUNY Downstate. Our program continues to participate in the training of student midwives, as well as medical residents and osteopathic interns.
The Midwifery Practice played a pivotal role in the formation of the voluntary doula program at Maimonides Medical Center.
